SAUDI INBOUND TOURISM: TOURISTS SPENT RECORD $41 BILLION

by admin

In 2023, Saudi Arabia surprised many with a record surge in spending by foreign tourists. This trend aligns closely with its broader push toward a vibrant tourism scene and the ambitious Vision 2030. Early figures from the Saudi Central Bank hint at an overall expenditure of about 154 billion riyals (roughly $41 billion), which is roughly 14% higher than last year’s mark.

Curiously, a large chunk of this boost came later in the year, when spending increased by 23% to an estimated 61 billion riyals, contributing significantly to the annual total.

Strategies to Boost Inbound Tourism

There are several reasons behind this upswing. Global marketing pushes seem to have played a central role, while broader e-visa access has made it simpler for travelers from far and wide to visit. Big tourism projects—think of developments like Diriyah and the Red Sea projects—have emerged as attractive new spots, almost like unexpected treasures for visitors. And, quite naturally, hosting international sports, cultural and entertainment events has helped the Kingdom earn recognition as a go-to destination.

Tourism at the Heart of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030

Tourism stands at the center of Vision 2030, which, generally speaking, aims to diversify the economy by relying less on oil. The plan is to welcome an astounding 150 million tourists each year by 2030, a target underpinned by investments that top $500 billion in new infrastructure and destination enhancements. Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khatib even mentioned that the Kingdom is betting hard on entertainment, sports and events to carve a niche among the world’s top tourist destinations.

Growth of the Retail and Hospitality Sectors

The ripple effects of the booming inbound tourism have been felt far and wide—retail, eateries, hotels and similar spaces have all bounced back, with activity in these areas rising by about 8% over the last year. Official numbers tell us that wholesale and retail trade, along with accommodation and entertainment, now involve roughly 20% of the overall workforce in the Kingdom, creating around 2.5 million jobs (with about 22% of these positions held by Saudis). All this signals an ever-growing demand for jobs in tourism, which in turn opens up more opportunities for both citizens and residents.

Strong Outlook for the Tourism Sector in Saudi Arabia

Looking ahead, the travel and tourism industry is set for even bigger things. One report from the World Travel and Tourism Council predicts that by 2024, this sector’s contribution to the GDP may reach 500 billion riyals and generate over 158,000 new jobs. Meanwhile, the World Tourism Authority forecasts that by 2034, the tourism share could climb to 840 billion riyals, about 16% of the total economy. In most cases, these projections underline how tourism is fast becoming a pillar of economic diversity. The Kingdom is zooming ahead, rolling out mega projects, better facilities for tourists, and hosting marquee international events. With continued hefty investments in infrastructure, Saudi Arabia seems well on track to shine as one of the world’s leading tourist hotspots in the near future.
