Happy Godzilla Day to all who celebrate – and there’s fresh news in from Monster Island. As the legendary kaiju celebrates 71 years since he first stomped onto the screen on 3 November 1954, Toho has announced new details on the much-anticipated follow-up to 2023’s knockout Godzilla Minus One (aka Godzilla -1.0), from returning writer-director-VFX artist Takashi Yamazaki.
For a while now, we’ve known that Yamazaki is cooking up the next chapter in his Godzilla story – and we have an official confirmed title. The sequel is called Godzilla Minus Zero (written as Godzilla -0.0), and there’s a short moody teaser showing off that name.
Beyond the name, details on the film are still largely unknown. It’s unclear whether stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe will return as Shikishima and Noriko – though the ending teaser of Minus One regarding a suspicious mark on Noriko’s neck suggests that their story isn’t over. And what does Minus Zero tell us, other than it being one number ahead of Minus One? Since three-headed kaiju villain King Ghidorah has sometimes been known as ‘Monster Zero’, could we be looking at a monster face-off here? Or will Yamazaki keeps things relatively grounded for his latest film?

Also unknown is exactly when Godzilla Minus Zero will hit screens – if we’re lucky it may arrive in 2026, but we could be looking at a 2027 release date depending on the level of post-production here. Since Minus One won an Oscar for its incredible (and remarkably inexpensive) visual effects, it’s worth taking the time to get it right. Either way, the countdown to Minus Zero has begun.
